Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea next to Sicily, located to the west of Italy. Geologically it is part of the oldest formations of Europe (600 million years old). The climate on Sardinia is Mediterranean with a main northwest wind, the mistral. Little rainfall and the lack of large rivers and lakes have determined the landscape and the economic possibilities of the region. The largest river in fact, the Tirso, is only 159 km long and along it's upper course an artificial lake has been created to contain the necessary water resources for irrigation purposes.
The Nuraghe Losa is a nuraghe near Abbasanta. One of the largest and best preserved nuraghe in the island, it dates to the 15th-13th centuries BC. The bastion and the line of walls date instead to the late 13th-early 12th centuries BC. The nuraghe was used for funerary rites until the 7th century AD.
The Costa Smeralda is a coastal area and tourist destination in northern Sardinia, 55 km long and covering more than 30 km². With white sand beaches, a golf club, private jet and helicopter service, and hotels.
